The penultimate end saw Young Guns holding a “3” before the skip for Jammy Duo, Neil Mort ran the jack into the ditch. Higgins the skip for Young guns played a superb bowl next to the jack  to score a single and thus level the scores at 8 shots each with one end to play. Hirst led with three excellent “jack high” bowls for Young Guns to hold “3”, however Neil Mort excelled as he bowled in to take shot with his last bowl of the game for Jammy Duo to run out 9-8 winners in a top class game of indoor bowling.

Players who have made a superb start to 2018 in Halifax Bowling Club’s Indoor leagues are M.G.M.’s Marian Firth and Gordon Akroyd. In their first game in the Friday Evening Pairs they faced last season’s unbeaten champions Clayton (Tony Riley, Paul Kaye). Clayton took an early advantage before M.G.M. took control of the game and were leading 11-9 at the start of the last end. M.G.M. were holding two shots before Kaye with his final bowl of the game ran the jack to the back of the rink onto three of his teams bowls for Clayton to score a “3” and take the game by 12 shots to 11.

In the Monday Evening Fours Marian Firth was ill and so her team Rockets (Mick Rowntree, Stuart Coates, Akroyd) played with three players. The number 1 and 2 players bowled three bowls and at the end of the game a quarter of the score was deducted off the final shots scored. Rockets played champions Amethyst (Les Holmes, Mark McGorlick, Philip Holroyd, Dale Holdsworth) and once again rose to the occasion as they drew 12 shots each but had to lose a quarter of their score to make the final score 12-9 to Amethyst.

Another bowler to start 2018 in top form was Val Bax, the skip for Don’t Be Short (Ann Robinson, Del Haigh, Ron Bax, Val Bax). In their game against a strong Avengers (Steve Rothwell, Gary Plane, keith Hanson, Nick Blackburn), Val continually bowled into the head to save shots and win shots for her team as Avengers registered a narrow 12-11 victory.

In Division 2 of the Tuesday Evening Pairs Brookley (Marilyn Greenwood, Elspeth Hartley) gave one of their best performances as they narrowly defeated Hollies (Joan Holbrook, Keith Holbrook) by 11 shots to 9.

Rainy Days (Russ Gilbert, Katie Gilbert) gave favourites for promotion 46ers (Derek Finch, Stuart Wright) a fright as they were in the lead all the way before 46ers scored a “7” near the end of the game and achieve a 11-10 success.

The big game in the Wednesday Evening Fours featured “the big two” Clayton, the Autumn champions and Arriva. In last Wednesday’s game Arriva, off a maximum length mark went into a

6-nil lead before Clayton entered the game. It was then “nip and tuck” until the final end when Clayton scored a “3” to make the final score 12-9 to Arriva. Even the Clayton players had to admit that Arriva deserved to win as they were the better team.
