Vixens (Geoff Normanton, Hew Clark, David Wood, Mick Carter) moved into second place in the division with a narrow 11-10 win over Illingworth (Marian Quick, Ken Sharkey, Stuart Baker, David Laycock).

One of the outstanding games in Division 2 of the Friday Triples as when the leaders of the division Untouchables (Philip Hallowell, Alan Horbury, Michael Calvert) were up against The Fridays (Alan Singleton, Barbara Crompton, John Crowson). The Fridays included two players new to league bowling in Singleton and Crowson, to play alongside the experienced  Barbara Crompton. Untouchables, playing with confidence, quickly moved into an early 5-2 lead before The Fridays scored a “4” and in a “nip and tuck” encounter the teams moved into 8 shots each at the half way stage of the game. With two ends to go The Fridays had a narrow 13-12 advantage before Calvert, the skip for the Untouchables bowled in the “shots” bowl with his last bowl of the end for the sides to draw level at 13 shots each. There was still 30 seconds left on the clock (the jack had to be thrown out by 4.25 p.m.) for the sides to play a vital last end. Horbury, the lead player for Untouchables led a “jack high” length bowl which stayed as the “shot” bowl before Crowson, the skip for The Fridays sent his final bowl down the rink and this bowl finished “jack high” on the opposite side of the jack to Untouchables bowl. With much anticipation the measures were called for and to Untouchables delight their bowl was “shot” by 2 milimetres over the Fridays bowl. Untouchables took the honours by 14 shots to 13 in a superb game.

Don’t be Short (Gary Robinson, Ron Bax, Val Bax, Michael Calvert) and Up the Edge (Tom Gasson, Keith Hatzer, Frank Higgins, Scott Smith) were involved in a superb game in Halifax Bowling Club’s Indoor Autumn season in the Monday Evening Fours. Don’t Be Short raced off into a 6-0 lead against the youthful Up the Edge, before Up the Edge fought back to level at 6 shots each. With Tom Gasson and “skip” Scott Smith quickly finding their “length and line” which can be quite difficult when changing from “outdoor crown” to “indoor “flat”. In a “nip and tuck” encounter the scores were level at 13 shots each at the start of the last end. Don’t Be Short had never been behind in the game until the final end when Up the Edge scored a single to take the game by 14 shots to 13.

First Timers (Mary Barmby, Morris Thorpe) gave their best performance in competitive indoor bowling as they gave the experienced Spring champions T. & A (Trevor Heley, Ann Heley) a scare in the Saturday “Plate”. The “Plate” is a Pairs league where the players play with four bowls and play for an hour.  The other Saturday Pairs league , the “Shield” the pairs play for an hour and a half. With both lead players, Barmby and Trevor Heley favouring a medium to full length jack, at the half way stage of the game, First timers held a 5-4 advantage. T. & A. fought back and at the start of the last end the scores were level at 7 shots each. At the final end the Spring champions showed their experience and scored a “4” while first Timers felt the pressure but can feel extremely proud of their performance. T. & A. retained their 100% record with a 11-7 success.
